News from Hidden Orchestra

It's no secret I absolutely love Hidden Orchestra's Night Walks (I featured it here before). Absolutely marvelous music, gorgeous and moving.
Following, is the band's newsletter with info on their upcoming schedule, tours and new single to be released in November.

Hidden Orchestra
Welcome to Hidden News #5!

Welcome to the fifth Hidden Orchestra newsletter - and a special welcome to all those new subscribers who signed up over our touring since March.

It's now almost a year since our debut album Night Walks was released, an incredible 12 months capped by a huge variety of festivals all over Europe - from the epic extended lineup shows at Glastonbury (left) and the Edinburgh Jazz Festival, to Insider, North Sea Jazz, Pohoda, Stuttgart Jazz Open, Copenhagen Jazz, Shambala, Kelburn Garden Party, Kulturfestival St Gallen, Sofia Jazz+, Festineuch, Knoydart, Rencontres des Arts Fous, Brecon Jazz, Mostly Jazz, Dumfries Arts, Ljubjana Jazz, Outlook, Knockengorroch...  We've definitely seen enough tents now to last us until next summer. Thanks to everyone who booked us, carried our gear, engineered our sound and watched the shows!

Many of these gigs featured guest performances from Su-a Lee (cello, left) and Fraser Fifield (sax and whistle), whilst Mary Macmaster (harps), Marcus Britton (French horn), Phil Cardwell (trumpet), Calum MacIntyre (drums) and Julia Biel (vocals) made much rarer appearances - many many thanks to you all. All these remarkably gifted individuals have made a massive contribution both live and in the studio, and we are deeply indebted to them for their generosity with both their time and their talents. Special mention should also go out to engineers Pete Johnson and Ben Seal for their excellent work on the live sound.

Now we embark on an Autumn season of touring (see right), starting this week with shows in Leipzig, Nottingham, and London. Look out in particular for a special show at Swingfest in Essen, Germany, to celebrate our connection with the amazing Denovali Records, who released the beautiful vinyl version of Night Walks, and who will be releasing a 10" vinyl version of our forthcoming single (read on for more info about this). Swingfest is Denovali's annual festival, featuring many of their own artists alongside guests such as prepared-piano genius Hauschka, who will be playing on the same day as us. We will also be doing an exclusive performance at this event, featuring more acoustic versions of some tracks, highlighting Poppy's talents on the piano.

We'll take a short break over Christmas for Joe to work on finishing the new album - and then February will see more gigs in Europe and perhaps further afield...watch this space.

In the meantime, if you'd like more regular updates than these sporadic mailouts afford, please visit us at www.hiddenorchestra.com, or your favourite social media / audio-streaming / file-sharing sites - we're currently most active on www.facebook.com/hiddenorchestra. The new "Downloads" page on our website is the best place to get hold of any free music we release, including Joe's increasingly-popular mixtape series.

Best wishes,
Joe, Poppy, Tim and Jamie (Hidden Orchestra)

New Single Release

This will be released on 7th November, in digital EP form on Tru Thoughts Records, and 10" vinyl single on Denovali Records. It's based around new track Flight, featuring harpist Mary Macmaster playing a traditional Scottish wire-strung clarsach, as well as Su-a Lee (cello) and Fraser Fifield (whistle and sax) from the first album - and a cameo appearance on clarinet from excellent Czech producer Tomas Dvorak (aka Floex), who created the remix of Dust, which will be the B-side of the vinyl release.

The rest of the digital EP on Tru Thoughts consists of remixes of tracks from Night Walks by Floex, Lost Twin and Maddslinky. The Denovali vinyl single (which includes a free download card for the full digital EP) will also have a limited edition pressing, which includes an extra disc featuring "no-drums" and "drums-only" versions of Flight, completely exclusive to this pressing.

You can preview the "drums-only" version being used at the start of Joe's latest mixtape, made for Outlook Festival:
A further new mixtape should be ready to accompany the release of the Flight EP.
