Keeping in somewhat with the musical theme of the past few posts, today's band is in a similar ballpark. It's the new s/t album by The Oath, out on, not surprisingly, Rise Above Records this past March. This is straight forward good old fashioned heavy-metal, psychedelic and gritty sounding with female vocals. Judging by this track alone, I want to listen to the whole thing.

Some more psychedelic rock to end the week: Walrus - Walrus (2013)

Another discovery I had in 2013 was this Swedish group (with Mattias Olsson from Änglagård) playing psychedelic/kraurock/progressive rock. There's a terrific use of the various instruments here, the violin and keyboards provide a haunting atmosphere as the propulsive rhythm section follows up with their counteracting piece, all together achieving a dynamic and beautiful album.

Mount Salem - Endless (Metal Blade, 2014)

After Purson (The Circle and the Blue Door), New Keepers of the Water Towers (Cosmic) and Blaak Heat Shujaa (The Edge of an Era) last year, I get my psych/stoner itch rubbed again this year with Mount Salem's release Endless, released through Metal Blade records.

While nothing new, this is solid heavy, retro-sounding psychedelic rock with female vocals.
Here's the official release from this album, Lucid:

The Devil's Blood Release New Album In November

Great news I just read on the band's Facebook:

"The 11th of November Ván Records will unleash the second full length entitled "THE THOUSANDFOLD EPICENTRE". The cult is just in the studio to ban the tracks with the help of Pieter Kloos in the Void Studios. Expect a 70 minutes monster of psychedelic rock... more info soon."

Review: Out Of Focus - Wake Up (1970 Kuckuck, 2004 Second Life)

A lame review of mine from 2006 when I just started out.
However, since I like this album a lot, I hope that even this poorly written review will be enough to convey this and make you check it out. I've grown to like this album (and their two others) much more since I wrote it, so when reading this, add more enthusiasm into it :-)

Recommendation: Golem - Orion Awakes (1973?)

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIXtU-VjCSgJijxkAQdQSeV0i1_ifrUioVbc18eW-SJPDN8aax3XCP9MQgSNz6Q3PondMdFmaa09riqpHLBoA3eOfj8fxH9B-pjwopqfOxPUDTqILcECyUoBM76t3moKyI3pFpv4h99QoR/s1600/golem.jpeg

Supposedly originating in 1973, released by Pyramid Records to be sold at art galleries, this album has been reissued in 1996 and in 2010, with the latter supposedly having authenticity evidence in the booklet.
However, upon listening to this for the first time without realizing who I was listening to, it sounded to me more like a modern recording. When I then looked at the band and realized this is supposedly from 1973, I became skeptical. These two reviewers seem to think the same: 1, 2.

Regardless, Golem presents here a fuzzy psychedelic freakout session, excellent for your tripping needs...

If anyone has more info on this album (beyond what is found on the net), please share it in the comments.

After the jump you have youtube playlist of the album.

Songs to start the night with...: The Devil's Blood

The Devil's Blood, a hard/psych rock band from the Netherlands have released their debut, The Time of No Time Evermore, in 2009. Their music seems to connect two planes; that of the sublime and otherworldly, through the vocals and that of raw power, through their heavy sound.
Read a good review of the album here.

Enjoy three songs by the band below. Two songs from their album and one from their EP, Come, Reap.

A song to end the day with...: Future Kings Of England - Mustard Men

The Future Kings of England is the trio of Ian Fitch (guitar, keyboards, effects), Karl Mallett (bass, keyboards, effects) and Simon Green (drums, keyboards, effects) from the UK.
They play old-style/sounding psychedelic rock and have released 3 albums, all highly recommended.

Nighttime songs to halucinate to... by Moon Duo

As their name suggests, Moon Duo, is a duo made up of Ripley Johnson (of Wooden Shjips) and Sanae Yamada created in 2009 making psychedelic fuzzy soundscapes, trippy ambiances and hypnotic rhythms. I have their 2010 release, Escape, which is a short album of 4 songs culminating in about 28 minutes. They have another EP and two singles.

Here's a short bio from their website:
"Moon Duo was formed by Ripley Johnson of Wooden Shjips and Sanae Yamada in San Francisco in 2009. Inspired initially by the legendary duo of John Coltrane and Rashied Ali, Moon Duo counts such variant groups as Silver Apples, Royal Trux, Moolah, Suicide, and Cluster as touchstones. Utilizing primarily guitar, keyboards, and vocals, the Duo plays space against form to create a primeval sound experience. After a debut 12" single on Sick Thirst, the group released the acclaimed Killing Time EP on Sacred Bones, followed by the Escape LP on Woodsist."

Here's the song Stumbling 22nd St.

Review: Hills - Hills (2009 LP on Intergalactic Tactics Records; CD reissue 2010 Sulatron)

Hills Hills album cover
Hills are a psychedelic rock band from Sweden, comprised of the trio of Hanna, Kalle and Pelle who each play an assortment of instruments on the album.
Intergalactic Tactics Records released this self-titled album in 2009 in a limited run of 300. A CD reissue came out on Sulatron in 2010.
I got to know this band through a recommendation in the Progressive Ears music forum. Having listened to the two tunes on their myspace, I was able to get the album from Kalle from the band for review.

Review: Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound - When Sweet Sleep Returned (2009)

The oddly named Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound is another psych band I discovered in my journey through the Tee Pee catalog.
Based in San Francisco, this group formed from the core of Jefferson Marshall (guitar, bass), Charlie Saufley (guitar, bass), and Michael Lardas (drums). On this album, the lineup expanded to include Anderson Lanbridge (theremin, moog) and Camilla Saufley (keyboards, bass, vocals, flute) as well as Tim Green (vibraphone, e-bow, drums) and Cindi Kazarian (viola) and the following contributed vocals: Christina Monsfield, Brett Constantino and Evan Reese.
When Sweet Sleep Returned is their third album, released in 2009 and following the jump you can read my review of this release.
