It's been "back" for quite some time, since at least the mid 90s, in various forms: the classic prog style ("symph prog" with bands like Nuova Era, Ubi Maior, Bacio Della Meduza and many more), "experimental/avant prog" with bands like Nichelodeon, Deus Ex Maxhina and other styles, including progressive metal, of which there are numerous bands (all styles of prog metal).
